Following the release of Adventures in VHS, I took a year off from podcasting, but returned in early 2018 with Beyond the Neon.
Like Adventures in VHS, Beyond the Neon consists of an ongoing podcast series that leads to a book. But unlike its predecessor, the project is less about nostalgia, and is more interested in exploring everything that made the decade so special.
Backed by academic theory, each episode digs into the history, people and conversation around specific areas of 80s pop culture. By sidestepping the usual aesthetic fixation on the 80s, it looks for new ways to understand it. In other words, it’s not about what the 1980s was, but why it was.
The podcast will form the basis of a book which is set to be completed in Summer 2020. At this time, it will also be looking for a home, so if any publishers out there might be interested, feel free to get in touch.
